I've recently noticed this as well and just made the change suggested below... 
at least now a Jmol window appears and attempts to load something but I also 
get an alert saying 'Application Blocked by Security Settings' and I don't know 
which further settings I need to change.

yes, right around two weeks ago. Sorry to hear that it affected the workshop. 
Such a pain. But that simple fix does do the job. I'm having no more problems

Might be old news, but there's a change in Firefox with  version 23.0.1:

If you want to use a local signed or unsigned applet 
(file://.../JmolAppletSigned.jar<file:///\\...\JmolAppletSigned.jar>, for 
instance), then you need to set

   security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy;false
since the default is true.  Something like the issue here:
