I'm interested in knowing which distro you used as well. Here are my comments,

They create an application for almost everything you need.. CD Burning, music archiving, internet, system apps, etc... > > yes it's free. secure. fast. > > but. in many cases it's useless. and you have to go back to windows. This is because you came from windows and still have a windows mind in using an OS. I haven't used Windows since 2000, and even at work when i'm forced to use windows at certain times, I find it useless and have to revert back to Linux to do many tasks. Again, this is because i'm more used to the Linux way of thinking. The point is, the transition is slow. However, you need a good reason to make a switch from one OS to another. Otherwise you'll get bored when you're stuck and just go back. I recently found MacOSX to be the OS for my work. It does 95% of what i need in an OS, where Linux provided me with around 90%, and Windows with around 60%. But still, i find certain things even in OSX hard to do, or taking much more time, than when doing them the "Linux" way (for those more geeky, i mean using the CLI and bash and its tools rather than the GUI interface)... But i'm learning ;) > > > arabic support in Open office: > 1- no context numbering (you can only have arabic or hindi numbers). I'm absolutely sure this is possible. I haven't got OOo installed otherwise i would have found out for you. But please ask around in the forums or the support on how to do it. > 2- the logical way of writing braces is very weird > > 3- when switch from arabic to english the if the final characters are > somthing like (;:/,') its printed to left of the text instead of > writing it to right of the english text. Not entirely sure about point 2, but 3 is also known in MS Office here on my Mac, as well as on the net in many sites. > > a lot of windows program don't work with wine. Again, you will find alternatives in Linux to most of the apps you need, excluding games. And if you want to play games, go back to Windows :) > supporting arabic in wine is very poor and the text appears broken. But if you want my advice, stick to something Debian based. either Debian itself, or one of its minions, like Kubuntu to start with. Avoid any redhat clones like the plague > > crazy fragmentation in applications, interfaces, with alot of very > poor application and no single enough solution. To be honest I prefer it that way, but yea i see how it can be a problem. There's no real right/wrong answer here. > > the free alternative programs in linux are very poor and really > disgusting (I mean it) in most cases. In which category of applications are you looking at? I might be able to help giving you some that would be more stable and well tested if you wish. > > Installing hardware is a nightmare if it's not installed by > automatically. We're all here to help, and please give irc.freenode.net a try. There are many channels there that are more than happy to help. I hope this helps. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Jolug" group.
