Welcome to the group :) I would recommend Ubuntu as a start, it comes with GNOME, try it, if you didn't like it, try Kubuntu which is almost the same as Ubuntu but with KDE instead. If you want CDs just ask for a CD and I'm sure you'll find many on the list welling to copy it and give it to you.
