hi firstly i want to say thank you for some of the beautiful and touching messages postd by so many listers re the wtc tragedy. we are thinking of, and praying for you here in south africa. the company i work for, which is a multinational (about 200 countries) french group, had 3 minutes of silence, for all of its employees, on friday at 1.00 pm local time. now for the joni stuff..... so there i was - walking out of the local wholesalers, arms loaded with 6 boxes of blank cds. i never learn - they dont have packets, and on my way in, i always think its not worth taking a whole trolley for a couple of boxes of blanks. going past the cd section, i decide to just have a quick look to see if theyve got anything besides the normal top 20 and/or pathetic collections - but no - just the same old junk. on my way out i go past the dvd section, and something catches my eye - you know how it is when something catches your eye, but you dont quite get it - then you have to search for ages to to find what it was??? carefully put down the piles of cd boxes, and start with a detailed inspection - fortunately it doesnt take long - our joni really cant hide in a crowd, even on the cover of a dvd. i guess this jonifan thing is getting to me - that i can spot her picture in a whole rack of dvds while walking past & not even really looking... now ive heard of this dvd, and ive seen it advertised on the net, but to actually have it in my hand - but i dont have a player i tell myself, shutup & buy it i reply..... so there i am 10 minutes later - proud owner of two dvd's - and no machine to play them on :) (i also found jimi hendrix's "rainbow bridge" (except its not really jimi - except for the concert in the middle!!)) ive just blown my budget on a new amp & speakers, so theres nothing left for a dvd player. so its second best - i go & rent one - a five month contract - to see if its really worth buying one. a week later, (a week of staring at the dvd trying to get some idea of what it will sound/look like) the machine eventually arrives. of course the first disc in is joni. wow!!! the first time i have seen joni since i saw the last waltz way back when it first came out - and all i can say is it was awesome!!! talk about "class" !! beautiful music, beautiful singing, i *love* the way she moves (just like lucindas song, only its just her & the music). for a large part of the concert its just her & the music, we are the voyeurs, peeking in at her intensely private communion... somehow those stories about joni & "art" com back to mind - yeah, she does *make love* to art, and what a beautiful, and moving sight it is,,,,,,,, - definitely no apologies needed........ tears streaming down my face - somehow the tension of the last few days is released. of course, amelias "the drone of flying engines, is a song so wild & true it scrambles time & seasons, if it gets through to you" has a particularly poignant ring to it...... NB - please excuse me - im pretty sure i got the line wrong, but i dont have the lyrics here, & i cant check them at jmdl.com, because south africas link to the us is only running at less than 20% capacity as a result of the tragedy.. what a great end to a particularly shitty week......... and what a pleasure, when the music keeps going on, past the end of the tracklist printed inside the cover, such great songs, and they arent even listed!!!!! ron ps - quite fascinating - we are having our local production of "big brother" - the one where they lock people in a house & cut them off from the outside world - and the house/inmates dont even know about the wtc!!
