Sammy Davis, Jr. came out of his room on the 2nd floor (of which he had rented the entirety) of a motel in Tempe, Arizona, to wish "happy holidays" to a small group of us who were swimming in the outdoor pool on Christmas eve, 1979.
Because my acquaintance-type friend Debbie Garris of San Antonio was enough of a groupie to hang out near the backstage at so many Joan Armatrading concerts that she and Joan actually became good friends ... Debbie is an aspiring singer/songwriter and hairdresser who later had a gig cutting the hair of Joan's bandmembers ... and Joan gives Debbie a backstage pass to all shows of every U.S. tour (how cool is that???) ... I was able to meet Joan backstage at The Backyard in Austin, Texas, in 1995 (or was it '94?) ... Joan signed my ticket stub and the inside of my friend Joyce's cowboy boot. (Now THERE's an item for eBay!) As I worked indirectly for Ted Turner during my short time at the United Nations Foundation, I got to meet him and shake his hand on my 2nd day on the job. He's very obnoxious, but his heart's in the right place. That's it, I think.
