it is a difficult question, ron. joni does seem to ''update'' her lyrics
live. hejira, big yellow taxi, black crow. and then there's her decision not
to sing those songs she doesn't believe in anymore. it think it happens to
all of us singers and writers. you have to be able to be or play the
character in the song. when your role is not credible even to you, it's time
to drop that song from your repertoire, at least for a while. joni has done
that. there's a ton of material from the canyon years that i think she
wouldn't feel comfortable doing anymore. nowadays, she is using material
that is fit for large ensemble arrangements, and i think that this has
allowed her to get back to some oldies, if only from a ''project'' point of
view. i imagine that a 58 year old woman may feel a little silly singing
about ice-cream castles and angel hair, but the orchestra thing may make it
again interesting for her. so i feel that her singing BTS or coyote again is
not so much a confessional act as it is a cover of her own material as if it
had been written by someone else.
all this to say that joni either changes a word here and there or simply
drops the song from her repertoire, unless it looks good in an issaye
miyaki. [oooh that was low...]

this *was* a serious question - where joni's point of view, or philosophy
has changed over the years - how would she have to change some of the
"classics" to fit in :-)
