My 1999 edition of the World Almanac says the next most populous states are
Texas with 19 million, New York with 18 millionand Florida with 14 million,
though the populations in Texas and Florida are growing much faster than
those in California and New York.
Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio and the other states with populations above
10 million, though Michigan is closing in on that number.

The late great Chicago newspaper columnist Mike Royko once wrote that "God
tilted the United States and all the loose nuts rolled west to California."
