i'm back.
the landlady's son was hiding in the parking lot across the street, so he's
safe though so scared, poor kid.
the hookers that work at a night club around the corner are out and flashing
their tits at the cops. most of the city is out in the streets challenging
the 11 pm curfew [even our curfews are for night owls here]. people came out
with pots and pans and started banging away like there's no tomorrow. there
were a few gunshots but i think the spirit is more on the civic side all in
all.
the looting has been savage though. i don't believe for one moment that it
was caused exclusively by hunger and poverty. i see the workings of the
''peronistas'' behind all this. incidentally, the citibank on my block has
been smashed to pieces again; it is customary whenever there is any kind of
social unrest for people to take it out on the citibank. there goes my
favorite atm vestibule with the blasting air conditioning!
in the middle of all this violence and noise and tit-flashing, a gale from
the south east hit the city, which gave the events a most apocalyptic feel.
what's next, no one can tell. if they do confiscate funds and convert them
into monopoly money, the thing will not suit my cavalier tone anymore and
become real mayhem. the state of siege has been declared for 30 days. the
cops have been pretty tame so far. from my window i can hear the noise in
the streets, the sirens, the shouting, the masses going to plaza de mayo
[the big square in front of the government offices]. nothing much to loot in
my neighborhood, unless you want a new channel purse or a box of chocolates
[i would loot for the chocolate alone!!!!].
the wind has subsided a bit. i'll be up editing essays until all hours. if
there are any new developments, i'll report.
thank you for your concern. pray for the money for my jonifest airfare!!!!!
i love you all,
wally
