Hi Walt,

They are painted around the frame.  I saw that painting when she exhibited
here in L.A. in '99.  The painting was surprisingly smaller than I'd
imagined.  She discusses her framemaker and, I believe, that frame in her
KCSN interview which can be found in the JMDL article sites.  She said her
framemaker just hated her doing that but she has her own vision ;-)  Also on
the Joni Mitchell.com site there is a section about her exhibit in London in
around 1990 where it shows some other fabulous paintings and the same frame
treatment on them.
