Hi Walt, They are painted around the frame. I saw that painting when she exhibited here in L.A. in '99. The painting was surprisingly smaller than I'd imagined. She discusses her framemaker and, I believe, that frame in her KCSN interview which can be found in the JMDL article sites. She said her framemaker just hated her doing that but she has her own vision ;-) Also on the Joni Mitchell.com site there is a section about her exhibit in London in around 1990 where it shows some other fabulous paintings and the same frame treatment on them.
Kakki > You know the painting "Middle Point" with the words "idle", Idyl", "idal" and > "idol" on the frame:? Are these words painted on the frame, or is the frame > actually *part* of the painting, i.e., is a trompe l'oieul (sp?) of some kind?
