Alison, the various Janis movies (different sets of people pitching different movie scripts) have been kicking around way too long for me to have any confidence that either one will ever be made.
And there is no actress or singer who can do our Janis any justice. If the play "Love, Janis" ever comes your way, do see it. It is as close to experiencing her as we will ever again. It is based on her letters to the family, and is a bit more than Laura's book of the same name. Sam Andrews is usually director or at least involved in each production, and because it has the involvement of Laura and Michael Joplin (her brother and sister) some people think it is a bit sanitized but I don't think so. Even in the play, there are three lead actresses: one plays "Janis" and does the spoken parts, and two play "Janis Joplin" doing the singing, alternating performances because of the vocal demands. Janis has been ill served in that there is no discusson group for her like this one. The JMDL is unique as Joni - but then so Janis was unique. But while Joni seems to have a lot of fans who are caring and generous and sharing, a lot of the Janis discussion groups tend to be people who are more interested with showing off and being more Janis-y than anyone else. Michael Jopli ceased to be involved in a lot of the discussion groups because all they did was bitch about things. There was no sense of community. Janis deserved better. The family's Janis site is http://officialjanis.com/ and should announce if "Love, Janis" is coming your way. Another decent Janis sites: http://janisjoplin.net/ A discussion list for Janis that is pretty lame but still better than the others: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/janisjoplin/?yguid=65418573 (the Rev) Vince
