<< "Exactly what is the "Boho Dance" and what does the word "Boho" mean?" >>
Joni takes the idea from Thomas Wolfe's "The Painted Word"...Wolfe coined the phrase in his book (credited as the source in Joni's liner notes), where he descibes the codependence of the bohemian aspects of the art world with the establishment. The verse that sorta sums it up: You read those books where luxury Comes as a guest to take a slave Books where artists in noble poverty Go like virgins to the grave Don't you get sensitive on me 'Cause I know you're just too proud You couldn't step outside the Boho dance now Even if good fortune allowed I think it discusses the relationship between the artist who's not necessarily concerned with being famous, and the wealthy & powerful in the same art world that either celebrate or condemn the artist for being that way. I'm not sure if Joni was prejecting herself as the artist who attempted to reject fame or if she was thinking of somebody else. Much more to say about the song, but I'll leave it to others.
