Yeah, on the birth certificate it's "Joan" and I suppose maybe it was one of those nickname things like "Lama" in place of L'Hommedieu. So Joan became "Joanie", but "Joni" in text. In a typically Joni-esque twist, the nickname is what people *un* familiar call her and her school buddies (and Mendel employees) call her "Joan". The nickname is her public personna while the baptismal name is her familiar name.
