Yeah, on the birth certificate it's "Joan" and I
suppose maybe it was one of those nickname things like
"Lama" in place of L'Hommedieu.  So Joan became
"Joanie", but "Joni" in text.  In a typically
Joni-esque twist, the nickname is what people *un*
familiar call her and her school buddies (and Mendel
employees) call her "Joan".  The nickname is her
public personna while the baptismal name is her
familiar name.

You gotta love it as they say around her.  :)
