I've been studying classical guitar for a few years
now and the typical classical guitarist does exactly
that - you keep the left-hand nails short, so as not
to interfere with the strings and make them buzz, and
you keep the right-hand ones long, filed very smooth
(you can use fine sandpaper to make them ultra-smooth)
so get the right tone on the strings as you play them.

I don't get it either, but I guess they've figured out
a way. My problem is that my nails keep breaking so I
can't keep them all that long anyway.
