I don't remember there having been an MMH discussion on the list before. I was listening to "Miss America" a couple of days ago, marvelling again at one of the very greatest debuts ever. It was without precedent; it came and went, and apart from one EP of Christmas songs, has never been followed up. Or so I thought...
I did a google search a few minutes ago, and was astounded to see that there is another album, the soundtrack to a film called Apartment Hunting. Apparently the soundtrack isn't going to be generally released and likely to be as rare as hen's teeth. So, does anyone know ANYTHING about this work, or indeed what she's been up to, whether she ever tours etc?? I saw her in concert once, getting on for ten years ago I guess - and she was all over the place! She was wearing a seriously odd dress, seemed totally ill-at-ease, and at times appeared to be on the verge of losing it completely and fleeing the stage. Occasionally she and the band really gelled, and some of the new material sounded exceptionally powerful. What if... Anyway, what struck me most on listening to Miss America again was that "Keeping You In Mind", an original like all the other songs, could so easily become a standard. It really is a gorgeous song, with a heartsore lyric and a beautiful, melancholy melody. "The Year In Song", meanwhile, sounds completely unhinged, with some vocals that are literally disintegrating before the listener's ears. I'd love to hear from anyone who shares my awe of this singular woman and her singular debut album. Azeem in London NP: Mary Timony - Mountains
