This happened to me twice.  The first time was Bruce Springsteen in 1979.  I
had only heard Darkness on the Edge of Town and didn't like his voice.  His
concert was incredible though and I've been a fan ever since.  I have to
admit, I've gotten sort of tired of him lately, but I think Born to Run is
one of the best albums of all time.

I have to agree with Bob on Richard Thompson, too.  His CD's never grabbed
me, but I decided to take a risk and go to his concert and I was in complete
awe!
