I'm pretty much an atheist. Don't really think about it that much. For me personally the whole is-there-or-isn't-there-a-God is basically irrelevant. But what I do think about sometimes is why there's so much hub-bub between believers and non-believers. Seems to me no one should care one way or the other. If I'm wrong, and there actually is a God, I figure I'm still OK. After all, I don't have to believe in gravity to stay on the ground.
My favorite CDs of 2002 are a mixed bag of new and old. Since I don't play my old vinyl anymore, rediscovering an album on CD after many years can be a real treat. In no particular order: Heathen - David Bowie -- as good as he's been in years Essence - Lucinda Williams -- I like it better than Carwheels Milk of the Moon -- Greg Brown -- My first CD of his; really good Ram -- Paul McCartney -- Had forgotten what a joy this is; not a bad cut and one of the best beginning moments of any record I know Travelogue -- you know who Hissing of Summer Lawns -- ditto -- only got the CD for this this year. Don't know why I waited so long. So brilliant. In some ways I think it's her best album. Combines the 'hot, hot places' of C&S with the 'icy altitudes' to come on H. To my ears it's her most enjoyable masterpiece. Songs for Only the Lonely -- Frank Sinatra -- Wow. Talk about intense! Not a pandering bit of pop to be found on this disc. The artistry, ambition and integrity of this recording amazes me. Bird in the House -- Railroad Earth --- Happy, tuneful, well-played, acoustic kinda 'newgrass'. Don't often hear music that's full of joy much anymore. Not ten there; but that'll do. Bruce
