There is a school of thought that suggests that the afterlife could be just that. Not quite as simple as that tho. The thinking is that we create our own afterlife according to the way we are, the way we think. And these conditions would change as we change.
Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is within us and that we are all gods. certainly my life experience has shown that heaven and hell are states of mind.
If we survuve death, then it would seem logical that the conditons we find ourselves in would be fashioned by our minds, much like it is here, only more so because of the lack of physicality.

I think that no matter how far away from the 'light' we may tarvel, the way backis never barred-neither here nor in the next life.
