I almost left during Hissing. But then I just got better dope!
When i heard Paprika Plains I thought she had lost it. Of course, now I think it is one of her best works. Pure genius. And that was years after my last puff. But Mingus really turned me away. She just wasn't a jazz singer. And electric bass? Heresy. But it did turn me on to the real Charles Mingus recordings, which I still love. Night Ride Home brought me back to the fold. Baa-aa-aaaa-aaaaa.

Have you listened to DJRD? I think it's one of those records that people initially rejected, then came to love, although I personally loved it immediately. Along with Mingus, IMO, it presents Joni's voice at its best. It has Jaco's bass, but the overall sound is more colorful and diverse than Hejira. Some brilliant lyrics, too - notably the title track.
