(Chris M here, not Steve T. Note reply address at bottom.)

I had another one of those Joni moments a coupla days
ago on my way down to the south coast here in good ol'
Blighty.

As is often the case, I eschewed music for Radio 4. Radio
4 is an eclectic beast to say the least: chock full of esoterica
such that you never quite know what you'll find when you
turn on.

On my 2.5 hour journey I got a selection of programs,
including: something about heart disease; a seminar
by a very interesting, charismatic and humble author
whose name I forget (Q: How does your writing process
work? A: I don't really know, or want to); something
about the science of Formula-1 cars, and that of
iris recognition technology; etc. You get the feel for it.

The high point, getting back on track, was a wonderful
short story that I thought I'd recommend.

I won't spoil the plot, except to say that if the story
behind The Magdalene Laundries (there, see, Joni
content... hope it counts!) interests you, then this little
story will resonate very strongly. Had me in tears to be
frank, which is never good when hammering down a
motorway at harumph-ty miles an hour (officer).

It's called "The Sweetness Of Pears", but I'm afraid I don't
know the author offhand, and can't get to the Internet right
now to find out. Being so short, I'm fairly sure the text
of it might be on the web, or at least a reference to it.
A search through http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/ might
also yield the goods.

If I find a real reference in the next few days, I'll post it.
In the meantime, good luck, it's worth finding.

Regards,
