My experience with Gantry is that it is a NIGHTMARE if you don't install on a perfectly fresh Joomla site. We installed it on one client too late, after modules and modifications had been made - and now the site crashes whenever we try to install anything. And forget uninstalling! Gantry is like a virus you can't get rid of.
In my humble opinion, Gantry is to Joomla what WIX is to Dreamweaver. Something meant to make it "easier" that will only make you totally crazy. Not recommended at all.
