Thanks everyone for your help. For me at least, it turned out the
solution was to switch from the PuTTY client recommended in that
article to the one in the git bash distribution. As soon as I changed
the TortoiseGit configuration to use that instead of PuTTY, the git
push worked the first time!

I'm still not sure I understand all the git stuff, but at least it
seems to be functioning the way it should. Whether I can use it is a
different problem entirely.
