The other difference is that Thickbox resizes images to fit the screen + buffer size. While this is good in many situations, it often isn't desirable for displaying photos, where you typically want users to see the original photo quality. Lightbox 2 has the animated size transitions, and displays photos full size. So having something like Litebox which could be more suited to photo galleries than Thickbox is a good thing to have.

The default thickbox implementation doesn't have animated sizing of the images. They just pop up there with no transition from one to the next.
