And while you're writing that plugin (hint, hint ;), another point to address is the common practice of linking some element of the site header back to the home page. e.g. clicking the site logo takes you to '/'. You don't want that link marked like this. That's really where the benefit of restricting your selector to your navigation menu comes in, i think.
