Nope, that doesn't do it either. Actually I was really using a fade effect, but left that out because I can reproduce it with just the remove. I'm suspecting this is some kind of interaction of javascripts, because the site loads a bunch of them (tinymce, jquery, submodal and a couple of jquery plugins). Guess I'll have to disable them one by one and see if that helps.
