[jQuery] how to detect current toggle setting?

Good morning all,
When you use the toggle() or slideToggle() what's the best way to
detect the current condition of the effected elements? I'd like to
save the state of the user's window in a cookie. I could toggle a
class or add a property
when I toggle things but I wondered if there was a better way.
