Looked at it and will eventually get it. I messed around with eq a little
here and there, but I don't have much for sample audio right now.

It's not guesswork if you train your ears to recognize various 
frequency ranges.
How much have you experimented with an equalizer to learn what 
boosting or cuttin g various frequencies sounds like?  And, did you 
check out the Golden Ears program?
