Hi Edward,

The first performance advantage of JSP is that the pages are compiled: the
Servlet&JSP container converts JSP pages to Java classes, which are loaded
and executed like any other Java classes -- benefiting from JIT compilers.
Therefore, when the user accesses a JSP, the page is actually produced by
native code in the server side. The difference may be important if the page
generation code is CPU-intensive (e.g. calculations or generation of complex
HTML pages); but it's probably not as big if everything the ASP/JSP code
does is fetching data from some DB and doing some very simple HTML
formatting.

The second performance advantage of JSP comes from its portability. The
system I'm doing today will be deployed on a Solaris box that can scale a
lot better than Windows systems. We'll initially have a couple hundred of
users, but if we suddenly have thousands of simultaneous users, we can just
move the entire app to mainframe-class hardware.

OTOH, I think Microsoft's ASP benefit from tighter integration with IIS and
Microsoft's database technologies. It's probably faster for DB-heavy pages.
But I have no real experience to compare both (I'm in my first serious JSP
project too).
