Sudheendra,
I evaluated Tomcat, Orion and Resin on a Solaris Intel box. Now I have
Resin 1.2.1 on our production server.
Tomcat (jakarta.apache.org) is excellent for compatibility tests and
small traffic deployment. It offer smooth integration with the Apache
http server and is the cheapest ride in town.
Resin (www.caucho.com) is $500/license and is very simple to operate and
fast, fast, fast. I evaluated it for several months and the latest
version is really stable.
Orion Server (www.orionserver.com) is an "enterprise grade" product,
fast as Resin but with lots of add-ons: it comes with the whole j2ee
bundle. Of course at $1500/server it is not exactly cheap, but if you
need j2ee it is a real bargain.
You will find several other products with large fan-clubs, like JRun and
WebLogic. These products usually offer better support, but their updates
are a bit slower. Actually both Orion and Resin offers adherence to the
latest specs, like the beta-draft for the new Servlet/JSP standard.
My personal advice:
a) Start with Tomcat or Resin but consider switching the servlet runner
if it do not meet your requirements. JSP apps are highly portable and it
is fairly easy to configure a new deployment environment.
b) Add a good http server to your setup. Apache is a light year faster
than any servlet runner handling static content, and it will cost you
almost nothing to set it up. It will also handle load balancing with
several servlet runners.
c) Sun's JDK 1.3 for Solaris runs like a dream. Look no further.
