My tests showed that at least Mono (www.go-mono.com) is actually faster 
than Java for loops and prints and some basic constructs 
(http://freeroller.net/page/acoliver/20030126#a_java_developer_responds_1012).  
However, I have it on good authority that once you move into actual 
libraries Java shines well.  In particular the XML transformation under 
C# is several hundred times slower.  Meaning a previously 30 second 
transformation took several minutes with roughly the same code.  (I'm 
confident that they knew what they were doing)

happened to a Java formal response, especially one that a manager can

Be aware that this is a Microsoft propaganda ploy.

Pet Store was designed to *illustrate* architectural techniques, not to be
measured as to performance.
The proper response is that real Java-based applications (as opposed to
reimplementations of toy ones) are just as fast as .Net ones, often
   

faster.
