Subject: [Juglist] J2EE-.NET Shootout

I would like to offer my input on the upcoming .NET/J2EE shootout. I appreciate the more conspiratorially minded comments from the group because Microsoft has obviously done its share of sneaky things, and I don't deny that they will be fiercely competitive as well as sneaky if they need to, to try to win developers through this event. I would like to say that the shootout format as well as the questions have all been vetted by ALL of the vendors beforehand. They came back to us several times with offers for input and constructive criticism on format and questions. Therefore, what you will see from the vendors is what EVERYBODY agreed to and gave input on, and which in my view does not unduly favor one vendor but instead presents the main questions that need to be dealt with from ANY major vendor nowadays, questions about development tools, system manageability, support for devices, support for web services, what differentiates your platform, etc. As far as the "Microsoft vs. squabbling J2EE vendors" trap, I think the vendors are aware that we will contend for both J2EE as a platform and our own particular set of solutions. At least with J2EE you have a choice, and I am planning to capitalize on this and am sure the other vendors will too.

I also think, personally, that Microsoft needs to be ENGAGED. Their stuff is not superior, but almost always their marketing is. I look forward to contributing to this forum to hope to win more developers over to the Java world. I hope as many JUG members can make it as possible and show their support. I think it will be a fun event - see you next week.
