Peter, the "stable" downloads there, are the same as what you get from the http://julialang.org/downloads page. We just haven't put these "generic tarball" downloads there yet as we're still ensuring we have all the kinks worked out in the build process.
Helios, glad it's working for you now! I'm betting the problem here was that the target CPU architecture for the Ubuntu builds was "pentium4", whereas the binary I just gave you was targeted at "i686".
