"Desktops" (or similar names) is a simpler alternative to projects in 
EMACS, which I really like. The particular variant I use is Rameses

This feature, together with Auctex, is the reason I haven't switch to 
another editor yet. Does Atom have a package for this?

I haven't thought about it, but could project wide actions be implemented 
in such a context?
