Hi Peppe,
Your use case sounds valid to me. I would create a new tool that would be
named: "Search and Replace in Attributes" that would appear on the
Tools->Edit Attributes menu. It would enable only if a single editable
layer was highlighted in the layer list. It would include most of the old
tool's options with the addition of a Replace string edit box. It should
probably still select changed elements as an additional option.
I checked the library support and replace is supported so it should be an
easy tool to write.
