It seems that this problem comes out with my Ubuntu 11.10 (and 11.04).
I tested with OpenJDK(1.6.0_30) and JRE  1.60_20.
With OpenJDK I cannot even scroll down to see all file types

works for me on xp,vista,7 ... window7 screen attached. Which jre runs on your 
7? Is your 7 64bit?
