One thing that could prove very useful would be to have a "server" version of 
OpenJUMP.
That would mean refactoring the whole beast into separate modules so that all 
the
catalog, layers, I/O, rendering, etc stuff is completely separated from the UI 
stuff.
Then an HTML or Ajax UI could be created that can remotely use this new 
OpenJUMP "engine"
exactly the same as the Java UI uses it.
It would be like splitting OpenJUMP into a sort of Mapserver (maybe not limited 
to rasters)
and several UIs (a Swing one, a static HTML one, an Ajax one, etc.)

Obviously that would require a lot of work and someone able (and maybe payed) 
for doing it...
But please don't look in my direction :-)

Besides, I have no idea of how much modularized is the current OpenJUMP 
code...???
