Hi Larry and Michele
Line decoration is not the road since, as you say Larry, A segment of line
between two vertices can have only one or defined decoration, but not a numbers
of decoration according the lenght of line (which is what a geologist would
require)
*****************************************************************************
Let me say what geologists could need from a GIS software (OJ, Kosmo and
GvSIG)
a) a good tool for geospatial analysis.
- OJ can fully support this.
- Kosmo can partially support it , but Kosmo has a better/easier style of
tools compared to OJ.
- GvSIG can fully support this, thanks to Sextante tools.
b) The possibility to display geo-oriented lines and point symbols, and
advanced fill capability.
- OJ doesn't have it.
- Kosmo can fully support this need. With an advanced Style editor
- GvSIG doen't have it, right now
c) The possibility to save the map/view in a large format (A1-A0) with a
reasonable DPI at a defined scale. This is a critical situation:
-OJ has printing plugin (CADPLAN, Innevation) but it needs a lot of memory to
manage large image (we talked about, Larry, some month ago). Instead OJ can
save the view or a larger area (inside a fence) with a maximum of 3600 DPI
(thanks to you Larry). SkyJUMP seems not have this memory problems but it lacks
of a) and b).
- Kosmo con save the screen view but it lacks the possibility to save a
larger area.
- GvSIG can do this!! And very well
***********************************
So I came to this conclusion:
- A geologist can use OJ to do fully geospatial analysis, he can use Kosmo to
do some geospatial analysy (with an easier way).
- A geologit needs to use Kosmo to have a screen display of his project as a
geological map.
- A geologist needs to wait a while to have an output tool (save or print) to
print a A1-A0 sized map. At least he can use Kosmo to save screen (there are
some bugs on printing tool)
********************************
From this situation:
a) I asked SAIG and OJ teams to find a common way to share projects (eg. save
projects or way to use SLD to share basic style)
b) I asked SAIG to port the "save view" tool from GvSIG which fully support
point c)
My idea is that geologists can use OJ and Kosmo together for their job. OJ
for specdialized spatial analysis and Kosmo to draw maps and to display/print
projects.

Of coarse GvSIG has a similar project to support a complex style edition. See
these videos about the future development of the software:
