Hello,

All of your logs are logged to the hdd, if you do not have a CF, the logs are
then stored to the CF. You can run on the CF, but it will eventually crash
when it runs out of space. The hdd is the secondary boot device, but it is
still necessary for the router to function in a healthy state.

Subject: [j-nsp] M7i hard disk crash, can just replace to CF card?

Hello list,

last friday had a power failure, and after getting power back we had a
non-working M7i box. Chassis alarms doesn't even light on.

Looking at console port there was FreeBSD boot saying something about "error
32 lba 0" and "error 16 lba 0",
which took me to understand the disk (ad1, the 2.5" notebook-like one) went
dead.

After a few reboots, now it doesn't even recognize a hard disk being
present.

I wonder: if I place a CF disk on ad0 (at CF reader), and install JUNOS on
it (copying from another M7i), will it work?

Or am I required to have an working IDE HD ?

Juniper's docs says if a CF is installed, HD is a secondary option. But just
wanted to be sure before getting all this job done.

Before you ask: getting this RE-400 back to Juniper to RMA is not an option
at the moment (think about refurbished).

If this message is out of AUP, just reply off-list. Thank you.

Kind regards,
Felipe
