What's your output when you run:

doveconf | grep idle

You may need to run using sudo.

I am using k-9 (5.001 from f-droid) with dovecot 2.2.13.  It's working
fine, but the connection logs are odd.

I see 4 IMAP connections, which makes sense as I have 4 mailboxes set
for push. After some interval that's 10ish to 15ish minutes (and
varies), I'll see 4 closed connections, looking like:

Oct 14 19:41:52 example dovecot: imap(gdt): Disconnected: Disconnected in IDLE
in=421 out=2693

which I am interpreting as dovecot saying the remote side closed the
connection. This happens even when my phone is stably on wifi and isn't
losing connectivity to the mail server (or so I think). (I am also
seeing what seems like excessive connect/disconnect over cellular, but
it's hard to separate cellular issues from k-9/dovecot.)

My dovecot config for imap looks like:

protocol imap {
   mail_max_userip_connections = 32
   imap_idle_notify_interval = 29 mins
}

following the advice at

https://peterkieser.com/2011/03/25/androids-k-9-mail-battery-life-and-dovecots-push-imap/
to reduce k-9 power usage by not getting "I'm here" every 2 minutes, but
there's also
   http://razor.occams.info/blog/2014/08/09/how-bad-is-imap-idle/

I am using the stock settings for k-9, to use IDLE and to refresh the
idle connection every 24 minutes. I would expect that to simply send
some sort of "I'm still here", not tear down the connection and redo it.
I have disabled "poll when connecting for push" in an attempt to reduce
data usage, not having measured that yet.

So, I'm curious if anyone has clues about why the disconnections, or
about whether I should have some different settings on dovecot or k-9.
I am pretty sure I don't have any short firewall timeouts.

Thanks,
Greg
