PARENTS/FRIENDS

The Cooper Column: 'Gifted and Talented - too many teachers provide an
emotional climate of stress or stain .. continually questioning the
students right to be there.'
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12317
We have some very bright and gifted children in our schools. Further
developing these talents is essential to our future well being as a
nation. Generally the education system is failing to do this. The
education of the gifted very often does nothing for the unfortunate
pupils put into such programs except make them feel that to be gifted is
a handicap! Withdrawing the gifted from class to attend special lessons
is one of the worst examples of this. Invariably this means doubling the
workload, as the class teacher insists the gifted catch up on the work
missed during their absence ...

Parents and Teens Column: 'Parenting In The Singular - Single Parents
Must Parent Harder to Beat the Statistics'
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12602
The pros and cons of divorce have been ping-ponging back and forth for
years. We hear divorce is bad for kids. Then another study shows
divorce doesn't hurt kids as much as living in a home where the parents
can't get along. Next another researcher is claiming the scars of
children of divorce never heal and years later, as adults, their
relationships are affected. Then its back to it's better to live in a
peaceful home with one parent than in a tension-filled home with two.
Dr. Judith Wallerstein, a sociologist in California has been studying
divorce since the early nineteen seventies. Her studies and conclusions
have been documented in two books, the last being "The Unexpected Legacy
of Divorce: A 25 Year Landmark Study" ...

NCEA - Putting new hub caps on a 38 Ford
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12599

NCEA is a proposed assessment mechanism to the present educational
model.
The present model is wholly inappropriate for the 21stC and bolting on
well intentioned "patches" is taking us nowhere, and sucking out huge
amounts of passion and human resource in the process. We need a new
education paradigm; one that reflects the multiplicity of needs/demands
for students to be able to think, reflect and truly be lifelong learners,
not to pass trivial memory tests or carry out trite procedures but to
pursue the understanding of what they see and feel. This new paradigm
needs discussion so we can begin building the new vision of what school
could be ...
