Literacy in the Workforce

for people who have dyslexia and find reading, writing and/or spelling difficult.

The Cooper Column: '(It is) essential for every New Zealander to know
English, and to know it well'
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12318
Flying into Rome airport an Air Italia (the Italian national
carrier) pilot is getting his instructions from air traffic control in
English. This is repeated in every international airport in the world.
English is the language of communication. It is also the language of
business and commerce. It is also the language of the computer industry.

It is also the language of much more. Like so many other New Zealanders
I never learned another language although I was once able to ask, "Where
is my cat?" in French. And like so many New Zealanders I have been
fortunate wherever I have travelled to find that English was the second language.
It is quite simply essential for those from other countries and cultures
to know it, and know it well. So too is it essential for every New
Zealander to know English, and to know it well ...

In For The Long Haul
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12772
There is a movement sweeping through New Zealand which will have a long
term positive influence on how we view ourselves as a nation, and more
importantly how we view the importance of working with a more strategic
focus. Well over two hundred schools and businesses have now formed
partnerships with one another, as both sides of the relationship gain
something tangible to assist them in improving the quality of the
services they deliver to their customers/clients. A national
organization, 'Partners New Zealand Trust', is at the forefront in
eight locations around the country, fostering these productive
partnerships ...

Random House.
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12700
Reviewed by Gwen Gawith: It's not often one can describe a book as
both worthwhile and immensely enjoyable in the same breath. Ken Catran
is no stranger to success and Letters from the coffin-trenches is another
winner. It's the story of Jessica and her boyfriend, Harry. Harry has
joined the troops headed for Gallipoli and Jessica leaves school,
becomes a nurse, and ends up nursing the casualties of the war ...

PRYDE Drug Education: <i>Parenting is prevention</i>
http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=12600
There is a large body of research which now shows that
children and young people who are less likely to get involved in drugs:
1. Spend time with the family - being together in or outside the home,
watching TV, eating meals, going to the pictures, riding bikes, walking,

visiting family friends etc. 2. Spend at least some time of each day
talking with parents or another important adult in a meaningful way ...
