Happy Mother's Day! As we approach the middle of May summer looms large on
the horizon of teachers and students everywhere. Here is a list of top sites
to share with kids and parents as they prepare for summer 2002. Looking for
some factual substance? Check out a History of Summer Vacation at
<http://www.infoplease.com/spot/schoolyear1.html?link=hptext> and Making the
Most of Summer Vacation for Elementary School Children at
<http://eric-web.tc.columbia.edu/guides/pg21.html>. Thanks to Jerry B as
always for his recommendations!

Best Beaches in the USA - <http://www.petrix.com/beaches/index.html>
The best the beach has to offer under several different categories with lots
of great pictures and even links to find vacation accommodations. A creative
teacher could have a dynamite wrap up to the school year having students
make use of this site!

GORP: The Ultimate Summer Vacation Planner -
<http://www.gorp.com/gorp/travel/skills/summer.htm>
Imagine the possibilities as students use Gorp's site with a budget you
assign them. You can even add in those banking skills by using checks and
ledgers to help them keep track of expenses. GORP will offer all the details
on planning a trip to the hottest spots around this summer.

My Summer Vacation -- On the Internet! -
<http://www.education-world.com/a_lesson/lesson070.shtml>
Education World offers this virtual scavenger hunt based on the travels of
Kate and Matt. Each stop includes a link to a URL wherein students must find
the answer to a specific question in order to complete the hunt
successfully. Great practice for research and Net navigation!

911 Safety Rage - <http://library.thinkquest.org/J001802/>
This ThinkQuest Junior entry presents safety tips for hiking and swimming as
well as fire safety. There's a school beach hiking game, coloring
activities, and a collection of safety friends. Perfect for younger students!

Popsicle - <http://www.popsicle.com/>
What says summer like the classic popsicle on a stick? This site, presented
by the Popsicle brand, offers lots of fun as kids keep cool this summer.
Irresistible kid-centered graphics will keep them looking for more safe fun.

Propelled by Pedals - <http://library.thinkquest.org/J002670/>
Bicycle maintenance and safety is the theme of this ThinkQuest Junior site
with everything from bike history to tips on the kind of bike you should
buy. The section on how bicycles work covers force and motion, gravity,
inertia and friction.

Rainbow Magic Summer - <http://www.rainbow-magic.com/holidays/summer/index.html>
Here's an elementary-level site that offers puzzles, games, stories,
recipes, music and links all around the theme of summer. Children can learn
how to make lemonade while reading "The Lemonade Stand" and planning their
daily boredom busters! I like the way the music midi files avoid use of
lyrics for some of these past pop summer hits.

Summer Safety Links - <http://www.gordon.army.mil/dps/safety/newpage12.htm>
The U.S. Army Signal Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia offers 99 different
links concerning summer safety, ranging from water sports to skateboarding,
transportation to skin cancer. The sheer length of this page is impressive
in and of itself.

Summer Tips for Teachers and Parents -
<http://www.teacherszone.com/sumtips_teachers.htm>
The TeachersZone presents these tips and links to help everyone make the
most of their summer time. For teachers there's vacations and tours that you
can check out right online. For parents and students there's more than a
dozen well-described summer activities to help keep everyone happy and active.

Thrill Ride - <http://www.theatres.sre.sony.com/imax/thrillride/index.html>
Presented by Sony, click on the fun facts link and find out about all kinds
of great roller coaster trivia. Want to know the oldest roller coasters? The
highest? The Fastest? There's even a section on popular simulator rides.
It's the most fun you can have sitting in a chair at home!

2002 Summer Reading Lists -
<http://www.ci.shrewsbury.ma.us/Sps/Schools/SReading/2000lists.htm>
The Shrewsbury, Massachusetts schools offers this collection of summer
reading recommendations for students of all ages. Broken down into K-2, 3-5,
6-8 and 9-12, these are great annotated lists. But even moreso, here's a
nice example of a structured summer reading program for students.

Wayback: Summer Vacation - <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/kids/summer/>
The American Experience at PBS presents this nostalgic look at some of
America's favorite vacation hotspots. Can you guess which top spots might be
on the list? Be sure to check out the features on Summer Camp, Miami Beach
and Car Camping!
