WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
***********************************************************

Hello Gleason Sackmann,

Welcome to another edition for eSN School Technology ALERT. This week's top
story focuses on the recent ruling on internet filters in public libraries. The

ruling could pave the way for lawsuits against CIPA in schools. Hope you find
it
interesting!

Best of luck,

Tim Morris

I. TOP NEWS STORIES

eSN Analysis: Ruling could open door for legal challenge of CIPA in schools
-----------------------------------------------------------
Public libraries cannot be forced to use internet filters designed to block
pornography, three federal judges ruled May 31 in overturning a new federal
law.
Although the ruling does not directly affect schools' use of filtering
software,
some legal experts believe the court's findings might encourage students to
challenge the law as well.

II. TECH FUNDING NEWS
***********************************************************

Four ways to broaden your search for tech grants
-----------------------------------------------------------
I'm often asked to name the grant opportunities available to fund technology.
While I can name several off the top of my head, in fact there are numerous
grants that will fund technology. Don't make the mistake of searching only for
the grants with the word "technology" in the title, because if you do, you'll
be
missing out on numerous other opportunities.

Cable in the Classroom
-----------------------------------------------------------
Cable in the Classroom wants ten technology-savvy teachers to help develop
educational resources.

These educators will collaborate online and in person, and will be paid a
$4,000
annual stipend. Their schools will also receive a stipend.

Applications must be submited online by July 1.

$3 million in equipment from Southwestern Bell
-----------------------------------------------------------
Educators from 71 schools and technology centers throughout Oklahoma have
received $3 million worth of distance-learning video equipment—including
televisions, video cameras, and computers—from Southwestern Bell. The equipment

will allow schools to conference with colleges, museums, and other learning
centers to create virtual classrooms.

School Technology Buyer's Guide
-----------------------------------------------------------
This powerful new online database will arm you with the most comprehensive
information ever assembled about technology companies who sell products and
services to the K-12 school market. Includes over 3,500 K-12 technology product

and service companies.

If you're a potential buyer, you check out the all new vendor Rating Profile.
The Rating Profile can answer many questions about how the vendor conducts its
business. Since the rating system is just getting started, many vendors will
currently be listed as "Unrated." If you have used a vendor's service in the
past, you can leave ratings for other school technology professionals like
yourself. Whether your response is positive, neutral, or negative, other
educations will value your honest opinions which will help them make better
purchasing decisions. To rate a company, just search for the desired listing
and
then click on "Rate this company" in the right hand column. Rated companies
will
also have a "See all ratings" option.
