Future topics include: * Changes in the eRate program * Scientifically based research * Federal funding for education technology * Internet safety/information literacy * Emerging technologies, such as wireless and broadband * Total cost of ownership MINORITY LEADERSHIP WEB SITE LAUNCHED Alumni of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Minority Leadership Symposium have launched an interactive Web community designed to help meet the challenges of bridging the digital divide. Organizers hope that the Web site, at http://www.iste.org/minority-leadership/ , will play a key role in developing a large group of educational leaders in the minority community to address the issues of incorporating technology in the classroom. The ISTE Minority Leadership Project includes a directory of leading professionals within the minority community, including contact information, area of expertise, and biographies. Other resources are available to ISTE members and MLS alumni, including live chats, a community calendar, and an article share. The Web site project is supported by a grant from the National Educational Computing Association Special and Collaborative Projects Grants Program. SURVEY OF K-12 TECHNOLOGY DIRECTORS CoSN, the North Central Regional Education Lab (NCREL), and the University of Minnesota have mailed a survey to a sample of K-12 technology directors from around the country. The purpose of the study is to obtain comprehensive information about district technology support staffing patterns and school-level technology support personnel. CoSN hopes that the survey will contribute useful, nationwide information about the complexity of tech support staffing patterns in schools and information about those who fill these important jobs. If you receive a survey, please take just a few minutes of your valuable time to complete the short questionnaire. More information about the findings will be available later in the year. SUPPORTING CREATIVITY AND COPYRIGHT Creative Commons (http://www.creativecommons.org/) wants to make it easier for people to find works that are in the public domain or licensed on generous terms. The organization is developing a web-based application that will help scholars, artists, and others make their works available for copying, modification, and redistribution. Authors and artists who use the tool may choose to dedicate their works to the public domain or choose to retain their copyright while allowing creative reuses subject to custom combinations of conditions. Creative Commons will translate authors' intentions into "metadata" associated with their creative works. This will enable people to use the Internet to find, for example, photographs that are free to be altered or reused, or texts that may be copied, distributed, or sampled with no restrictions whatsoever - all by their authors' permission, expressed in code as well as plain, straightforward language. Creative Commons expects to launch these applications for general public use this fall. ATTEND THE CTO LEADERSHIP FORUM AT NECC The School District CTO Leadership Forum on " Broadband Applications: What Do Educators Want? What Will The Market Deliver?" will be held at the upcoming National Education Computing Conference (NECC) on Tuesday, June 18th, 2002, from 7:00 am-9:30 am at the Marriott Rivercenter's Salon M. This interactive forum will focus on broadband applications within the K-12 arena. Participants will learn where schools are headed with broadband capacity and which broadband applications school district CTO's say they want. In addition, the corporate community will share their vision on applications that make use of broadband. This event is LIMITED TO school district members of CoSN and the National School Boards Association's Technology Leadership Network and CoSN Corporate Members.
