* National PTA to Recruit More Hispanic Parents
The National PTA in the U.S. is launching campaigns in Florida, Texas, and
California to attract more Hispanic parents into its ranks. While about 15
percent of U.S. schoolchildren are Latino, only about 3 percent of the PTA
membership is Latino.

* Majority of Canadians Happy with Schools
More than one-half of Canadians surveyed recently said they are happy with the
education system in their province. Residents of Manitoba and Saskatchewan had
the highest level of satisfaction at 72 percent.

* Dept. of Ed Creates Two New Offices
The U.S. Department of Education this week announced the formation of two new
offices within the department: the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools and the

Office of Innovation and Improvement. The first office will handle all issues
related to safe schools and substance abuse prevention. The innovation and
improvement office is charged in part with investing in promising practices and

communicating the effectiveness of those practices.

Oakland, California, school officials have enlisted a diabetes nurse educator

children. District officials are concerned about the growing prevalence of
