Featured Space Store Product

* Little Astronaut Set

Today in Science/Astronomy:

* NASA Invention Pinpoints Lightning Strikes
http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/lightning_strikes_020925.html

If lightning really never struck twice in the same place, Dr. Pedro Medelius's
job would be a lot easier. But since bolts from the blue can hit wherever they
please, figuring out what's been zapped within the 140,000 acres of NASA's
Kennedy Space Center (KSC) could seem hopeless.

* Astronotes: Space Chimp Descendants Rescued
http://www.space.com/news/astronotes-1.html

A court ruling has allowed the Florida Center for Captive Chimpanzee Care to
take over a facility in New Mexico that houses 266 chimpanzees, including 16
Air
Force chimps descended from the first of their kind that went into space.
Conditions at the primate testing facility, called Coulston Foundation, were
said to be less than stellar, according to an article in Discovery online.
Animal rights groups had accused the facility of mistreating the primates.

* The Search for the Missing Amazon Meteor
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/crater_expedition_020924-1.htm
l

The Araona people wanted $1 million before they would let the NASA scientists
pass through their territory in the remote Bolivian Amazon. Given a budget of
$20,000 for their entire expedition, the scientists resorted to negotiating,
and
the indigenous people eventually agreed to a payment of $500, plus 500 rounds
of
.22 ammunition and 200 D-cell batteries.

Today in SpaceFlight:

* Galileo Spacecraft Prepared for Flyby of Tiny Jovian Moon Almathea
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/almathea_flyby_020925.html

The Galileo spacecraft is being prepared for one of its final tasks, a close
flyby of Jupiter's moon Amalthea set for Nov. 5.

* Task Force Recommends Independent Shuttle Safety Group
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/fl_shuttle_020924.html

As NASA contemplates handing over more space shuttle operations to private
companies, a task force assigned to study the subject recommends an independent

safety organization no matter how the agency handles privatization of its
manned
spaceflight programs.

* NASA Underwater Crew Includes Flight Director on Mission
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/neemo_020923.html

A NASA flight director on Monday went where none have been before and became
part of a crew serving on a different sort of risky mission.

Today in Business/Industry:

* APT Drops Demand To Launch Apstar 5 Satellite From China
http://www.space.com/spacenews/

Loral Space & Communications has struck a deal with its Hong Kong-based
customer
to launch the Apstar 5 satellite on a non-Chinese launch vehicle if the U.S.
government fails to approve the export of the satellite by Sept. 30.
