The Cooper Column: 'competition in schools' http://www.theschooldaily.com/articleView.asp?articlePK=16205 Somehow there is a perception in our society that competition is no longer an acceptable part of school. This is a quite wrong perception whether in the academic area, the sporting area, or the cultural area. In the academic area first of all there is mathex - an intense mathematical competition where small teams compete against each other to solve often quite difficult mathematical problems. Mathex is an annual regional competition from the mid primary years to senior secondary. It is fiercely competitive with the prestige of individual schools at stake. Most schools hold their own in class competitions to determine their team or teams. So it starts with competition within the school. Adding time pressure intensifies the competition at the regional level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- LEARNZ2002 'Mountains of Mana' - Auckland Volcanoes - register now! http://www.learnz.org.nz/2002/ Articles from the latest 'Good Teacher' and NZ Information Literacy Archive http://www.TheSchoolQuarterly.com 'Wordsmith 2.0' an integrated toolbar in MS Word providing literacy support from textHELP! http://www.texthelp.co.nz Reach out to international educators through ASCD http://www.ascd.org/aboutascd/internationalwebsite/index.html?schooldail y Read&Write 6 Gold - just released toolbar for literacy and study support http://www.texthelp.co.nz/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- To subscribe to TheSchoolDaily please go to http://www.theschooldaily.com/subscribeNewUser.asp ************************************************************************* NOTE: Gleason Sackmann is the owner and host of this list.
