              TALKBACK

This week's topic:

Can Computers Sub for Teachers

A fight in a Connecticut school district over the use of computers to
provide high school courses is raising questions about whether
technology can replace teachers, EDUCATION WEEK Staff Writer Andrew
Trotter reports in this week's issue.

Some teachers from Nonnewaug High School say they were given no
meaningful role in supervising a special remedial program in which
instruction is provided entirely by computer. They contend the program
violates a state mandate that a certified teacher be responsible for
instruction, evaluation, and grading of students. The district's
superintendent worries that opposition by the local and state unions is
putting in jeopardy a program that could be a lifeline for some
students.

What role should technology play in the classroom? Should teachers be
concerned about technology replacing them? Join the discussion:
