In fact, my motivation for compiling was to test the French localization

I've started playing with the "Lokalize" GUI to edit the .po file. I
don't get all the options, but globally I like it and it's quite
straightforward to use.

For now, I've played a bit and got 60/400 strings translated. I can
continue to work on it today. Would it make sense to include it in 0.5 ?
(as a source of self-motivation for me ;-) )
