My experience doesn't necessarily apply, because it is more
inside a big (and getting smaller ') company, SGI, but I've
seen schemes come and go to maintain such source attributes.

Only one thing works, in my world.  A source control system.

If and when Linus and those he trusts decide to adapt something
like bitkeeper, then you will start seeing the meta-data you (esr)
desire becoming available.  Not a day sooner, so far as I can
tell.

As to whether or not they should adapt bk, I'd recommend it.
But I'm way too clueless in linux kernel development to be
a useful witness.
