If you can't switch VTs, then there's a chance KWin's main thread is blocking
on something. Can you get a backtrace of it?

The permission denied warning suggests that switching VTs maybe did work (and
at least take away KWin's permissions to re-enable the screen), but the screen
still didn't turn on?

Can you get the full log (journalctl --user-unit plasma-kwin_wayland --boot 0)
from when the screen stays black, before you do anything on the laptop itself?
